Civil Engineering

H.M.S. Polytechnic

Engineering is a term applied to the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences, gained by study, experience, and practice, is applied to the efficient use of the materials and forces of nature.

Engineers are the ones who have received professional training in pure and applied science. Before the middle of the 18th century, large-scale construction work was usually placed in the hands of military engineers. Military engineering involved such work as the preparation of topographical maps, the location, design, and construction of roads and bridges; and the building of forts and docks. In the 18th century, however, the term civil engineering came into use to describe engineering work that was performed by civilians for nonmilitary purposes.

Civil engineering is the broadest of the engineering fields. Civil engineering focuses on the infrastructure of the world which include Water works, Sewers, Dams, Power Plants, Transmission Towers/Lines, Railroads, Highways, Bridges, Tunnels, Irrigation Canals, River Navigation, Shipping Canals, Traffic Control, Mass Transit, Airport Runways, Terminals, Industrial Plant Buildings, Skyscrapers, etc. Among the important subdivisions of the field are construction engineering, irrigation engineering, transportation engineering, soils and foundation engineering, geodetic engineering, hydraulic engineering, and coastal and ocean engineering.

Concept
Civil Engineering is considered as one of the most globally accepted premier branches of Engineering. Due to impact of development in Technology, it has diversified into sub branches like Geo-Technical Engg to Structural Engg., Water Resource Engg. to Environmental systems, Infrastructural Technology to Geographical Information system (GIS). This branch of Engineering lays special emphasis on computational Construction Technology according to latest developments.

The Department of civil engineering at HMS

The department of Civil Engineering at this institute was established in the year 2010-11 with an intake of 60 students and the intake was increased to 120 during the year 2014-2015. Since its inception the department has enjoyed the overall development in all aspects like admission, results, placements, well established laboratories, Qualified and Well experienced faculty and other infrastructure facility. In addition to academic activity, the department supports extracurricular activities.

Civil Engineering has been approved by AICTE, New Delhi and is affiliated to premier Technological University in India –Visveswaraiah Technological University, VTU, Belgaum for conducting the course. The curriculum is being updated once in 4 years by the University to meet the present and the latest Technological developments in cutting edge Technology. The duration of the course is 4 years spread over 8 semesters with syllabus is framed according to latest trends.

H.M.S. Polytechnic

The department is housed in a separate new building by name Sir M.V. Block named after veteran Engineer and Architect of Karnataka, Bharatha Ratna Sir M. Visveswaraiah. The Department is well planned with spacious class rooms & labs, equipped with latest equipment to cater to the needs of academic curriculum and industrial needs. The department has well qualified and experienced faculty members to impart and imbibe needed technical skills to face global challenges.

Our main goal is to develop your hidden skills and talents
